Obituary for Stephen Irwin Rogers

A farmer, a school teacher and a friend to all, Stephen Irwin Rogers of Speedwell, TN passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 25 at Methodist Medical Center, surrounded by his loving family. Steve was born on Feb. 6, 1938 to Jeanette Irwin Rogers and Smith H. Rogers who preceded him in death along with his sister, Jane Rogers Mandelke.

Steve was a graduate of Powell Valley High School and earned a Bachelors, a Masters and a Doctorate Degree from Lincoln Memorial University, Union College and Nashville School of Law. He was a veteran of the US Army and a member of Cawood United Methodist Church.

Steve enjoyed his daily walks to the creek, working in the garden, tending cattle and riding bikes on the beach. He was mechanically gifted and loved to fix whatever was broken. He was quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to get angry (James 1:19).

He will always be remembered in love by his devoted wife of 52 years Freda Mae England Rogers; daughters Susie Rogers, Peggy Iachetta and Linda (and Ronald) Lambert; son David (and Amy) Rogers; grandchildren Summer & Sydney Willis, Andy & Ben Iachetta, Kayla & Kenna Lambert and Corley, Bryce & Cade Rogers; and a host of extended family and special friends.

The family will receive friends at Cross-Smith Funeral Home in LaFollette on Saturday, Oct. 28 from 5-7pm with the funeral to follow. The graveside service will be held on Sunday Oct. 29 at 1pm at the Major David Rogers Cemetery on the family farm. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cawood United Methodist Church or to the Hospitality House at Methodist Medical Center.
